General information and FAQ of the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Program

Article about the application timeline, application guide, deadlines, Federal Scholarship Board contact details regarding the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Program.

The application deadline for the 2026/2027 academic year program was 15 January 2026, 2:00 p.m. Central European Time and the call for application for 2027/2028 academic year has not yet been published, therefore currently there is NO OPEN APPLICATION.

Application timeline:

For Nigerian applicants, the scholarship procedure includes two parallel steps. First, you must submit a complete application in the official online application system by the published deadline for the relevant academic year. Second, your application can proceed in the selection process only if you are nominated by Nigeria’s designated Sending Partner, the Federal Scholarship Board (FSB).

The Embassy of Hungary in Abuja does not

  • receive applications
  • does not carry out nominations
  • does not accept direct submissions as an alternative route
  • provide information update on individual application cases (for that contact the FSB)

Nigerian applicants do not need Embassy recommendations for Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Application.

The FSB may set an earlier local deadline than the online deadline and may request additional steps (including submission of documents by email and/or hard copies). Applicants should therefore contact the FSB as early as possible to confirm the exact nomination procedure, required documents (if any beyond the online uploads), and the local timeline.

Entry requirements

On academic entry requirements (including WAEC and other school qualifications), neither the Embassy nor the Sending Partner can confirm acceptability or make an admission decision in advance, as entry requirements are determined by the selected Hungarian host institution. Applicants should contact their chosen institution directly if they need confirmation on qualification acceptability. Please also note that applicants must meet the age eligibility rules of the relevant Call for Applications (for example, in the 2026/2027 cycle, applicants born after 31 August 2008 were not eligible, i.e., applicants had to be 18 years old by 31 August 2026, with limited programme-specific exceptions).

Important note on the Nigerian BEA framework

The Nigerian Government has announced the discontinuation of its BEA scholarship funding, meaning that Nigeria will no longer finance new overseas scholarships under the BEA framework. This does not stop scholarships that are offered and financed by other countries for Nigerian citizens, it means that costs must be covered by the offering country’s scholarship scheme, not by the Nigerian Government. Hungary continues to offer the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme under its own framework which has no financial obligations for the Nigerian Government. However we would like to mention that the Nigerian BEA-related financial contributions that previously complemented the outgoing students’ support (such as monthly allowances and travel-related costs) have stopped from the 2025/2026 academic year, and the scholarship is covered only by the Hungarian Government under its own framework.
