The competent decision-making authority is the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing, information regarding residence permit for the purpose of study, the application form and appendix can be found on the website of the authority.

A residence permit for the purpose of studies may be issued to a third-country national, who

• establishes or has established a learning relationship with a public education institution registered in the public education information system as operating a full-time school system, or

• full-time studies at a state-recognised higher education institution or at a foreign higher education institution authorised to operate in Hungary, or

• wishes to reside in Hungary to participate in a preparatory course organised by the higher education institution

The type D visa entitling its holder to receive a residence permit shall be issued by the Consular Office.

Please note that type D visa entitling their holder to receive their residence permits issued to third-country nationals is a single-entry visa authorising a stay of not more than 30 days and is valid for 3 months.

Please note that if you do not enter the territory of Hungary within 3 months from the date of approval of the issuance of your residence permit and do not start your approved residence, the approved residence permit becomes invalid and the approval of your accrued right of entry and residence ceases.

The application can be accepted only if you submit the documents as follows:

  • filled and signed application form for the residence permit and Appendix No. 9.13

•     valid passport with at least 2 blank pages (and previous passport/s, if any)

•     2 passport photos

  • flight booking
  • health insurance
  • not mandatory: CV, motivation letter, police character certificate

FOR THE PURPOSE OF STUDY:

  • acceptance/admission letter issued by the university/college
  • proof of payment of tuition fees
  • original diplomas and school certificates, including WAEC or NECO certificate

FOR THE PLACE OF ACCOMMODATION IN HUNGARY:

  • a dormitory certificate
  • a residential lease contract
  • a document on accommodation by courtesy
  • a document in proof of the reservation of accommodation and payment for it

FOR THE DOCUMENTS IN PROOF OF MEANS OF SUBSISTANCE IN HUNGARY:

If it will be provided for the applicant by the applicant himself/herself:

  • the applicant’s own bank account statement/s for the last 6 months, signed and stamped by the bank

If it will be provided for the applicant by a sponsor:

  • document for proving the family relationship (e.g. original birth certificate)
  • a notarised declaration by a family member of the applicant’s undertaking to provide maintenance and care for the applicant
  • the sponsor’s bank account statement/s for the last 6 months, signed and stamped by the bank
  • proof of income of the sponsor, stamped and signed by the person impowered on behalf of the workplace (e.g. income verifications, payslips, tax certificates, CAC certificates, etc.)  

IF THE APPLICANT IS A MINOR, please submit a proper consent letter from the parents signed by both parents and written as proposed below:

the parents’ notorized or attorney certified consent letter to the visa applicant’s stay in Hungary should be written either in English or in Hungarian containing both the minor’s and minor’s parents’ personal data as mentioned below:

  • surname and first name
  • surname and first name at birth
  • birth place and date
  • gender
  • mother’s maiden name (surname and first name)
  • nationality
  • international passport number,

furthermore

  • the purpose, duration and destination of the stay in Hungary,
  • the expected date of entry and exit,
  • declaration of both parents on agreeing on the applicant’s stay in Hungary.

Please be noted that every decision is made on case-by-case basis, therefore the authority may request the submission of further documents for clarification of facts!

Time period for procedural administration: 15 days

In addition to mandatory attachments/enclosures, the authority may request the submission of further documents for clarification of facts of the case or implement other procedural conducts.

The period for remedying deficiencies (e.g. submission of missing documents) and for the implementation of various other procedural conducts is not comprised in the time period of the procedural administration. 

The authority acting on the application for a residence permit for studies case adopts a decision as to merits within 60 days from the date of the submission of the application.

!!FAMILY MEMBERS OF ANY THIRD-COUNTRY NATIONAL HOLDING OR APPLYING A RESIDENCE PERMIT FOR THE PURPOSE OF STUDIES CANNOT APPLY FOR A RESIDENCE RERMIT ON THE BASIS OF FAMILY REUNIFICATION!!
